There is a lot of social media focus on Soilfix and the projects that we are working on, but none of this would be possible without our valued employees.
From pumping injection wells in the cold to recording waste tickets from the comfort of a warm office, every employee plays a vital and valuable role.
The ‘Employee Spotlight’ series introduces you to our staff and in turn, gives a round of literary applause to each.
We continue this series for May with Darrell Thomas, who is our Remediation operative.
Name: Darrell Thomas
Job Title: Remediation Operative
- Briefly describe how you spend your day.
Most days I am supporting site managers behind the scenes, from carrying out repairs to sorting deliveries, driving plant, stock control and waste management.
No one day is the same.
- What is the best thing about your job?
It is very varied and I am left to my own devices most days to get things done.
- What is the best thing about working for Soilfix?
The camaraderie on site is amazing and everyone knows their responsibilities so we can really rely on each other.
The things I have learned from the more experienced staff have helped me extremely through the years, as I don’t have a groundworks background.
- Proudest moment so far working for Soilfix?
There are so many really, from safely identifying a UXO and safely dealing with it on a project, to finding WW2 historical artifacts.
Most of the time it’s just nice to work for a company that is cleaning up the environment one bit at a time!
- What do you like to do outside of work?
Not your everyday hobbies! I am a keen paintballer and I am in two teams. I mostly take part in big games of 800 to 2000 players on the field at once.
Usually three-day events from army villages to scrap yards and empty theme parks.I also work part-time as a lead pyrotechnician, running professional fireworks displays for weddings and events.
I’ve carried out pyrotechnics from the tops of buildings to onboard boats.
I’m a natural tinker, I love fixing things….my motto “If it’s broken what’s the worst I can do”. I’m successful 80% of the time!
- What inspires you?
Getting a project finished is a great reward so I’m willing to get right in the mud and crud to get it finished – never want to let the team down.
- Fill in the blank: I once met ….
Greg Hastings – he is a famous professional American paintball player that had a console game based around him.
- If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
Learn Mandarin, use a multimeter, and drive a tracked shovel. I will do two by the end of the year.
- What’s your Monday morning ‘motivational shower song’?
I listen to a very weird list of music that most people would not get!
I’m into a lot of Techno but to get me rocking, it has to be “Dirty Harry” by Gorillaz.
- What are five words (or less) of advice for others in your profession?
“Buy cheap buy twice”
Sometimes buying cheap stuff to get things done can really bite you in the bum later adding more expense.
