There is a lot of social media focus on Soilfix and the projects that we are working on, but none of this would be possible without our valued employees.
From pumping injection wells in the cold to recording waste tickets from the comfort of a warm office, every employee plays a vital and valuable role.
The ‘Employee Spotlight’ series introduces you to our staff and in turn, gives a round of literary applause to each.
We continue this series for June with the Soilfix Admin Team, who are made up of the following staff members
Briefly describe how you spend your day
Carole: Amongst other things, help look after the Compliance side of the Business – BMS Audits, PQQ’s, operating procedures, Approved Supplier status etc. Manage training records, book courses, ensure CITB Grants are received & co-ordinate applications for additional CITB funding when available. Maintain vehicle service records & keep holiday records up to date. Oversee induction process for new starters & exit process for departing staff. Maintain rapport with key Suppliers. Support Aleks & carry out PA duties for George as requested. Assist Lewis, as required. Carry out Covid-19 Office Inspections.
Aleks: My main role is to support our projects every day, I’m involved with every single one of them to support admin/ purchasing site of the contract. Looking after our Bristol office on an everyday basis.
Ann: Get up at 7ish, shower and prepare breakfast. Take husband cuppa. Log on to computer about 7.45 and check emails. Sort out any issues/answer emails. Check WebExpenses for new invoices and process. Speak to Kelly on Teams when necessary. Each day is different so generally sort out all the accounts. Try to get a run in at lunchtime a couple of times a week. And at the end of the day, prepare and cook dinner.
Kelly: My day can vary depending on where we are in a month, I split my time between providing monthly financial reports to Directors and senior management and looking into processes within the business, fully understanding how they currently work whilst investigating ways that these could be standardised or improved for better outcome.
Zoe: My role is split between office admin and marketing. I love the quiet monotony of admin and the excitement of Marketing, so for me it’s the perfect mix. It can be quite a reactive job, I may have my day all planned out, which then goes to the wall by 9am as there are more pressing priorities. I look after the Rayleigh Office, so feel like ‘hub mother’ when my boys are in residence. Aside from being a general all rounder, I take care of hotel bookings, travel and events, monthly Barclaycard statements, assisting the Purchasing Department and Commercial Team, Waste Ticket logging, keeping the website updated and of course social media for Soilfix.
What is the best thing about your job?
Carole: Being involved in so many areas of the business.
Aleks: Being part of an amazing team.
Ann: There is always something new to learn, so it never gets boring.
Kelly: Being trusted to use my experience and knowledge from previous roles to provide extra finance support to the business and its processes. I like the challenge of building relationships with the rest of the Soilfix Team to ensure that finance is a valued resource, not a tick box exercise.
Zoe: I love creative writing and having free range (pretty much) on Soilfix Social Media Accounts is something that I love being responsible for. I don’t always understand what I am writing about (in fact the guys do all the technical stuff) but I’m the one that comes up with the fun and quirky stuff!
What is the best thing about working for Soilfix?
Carole: Being able to meet so many people inside & outside the Company.
Aleks: There are not the same days, every day is different.
Ann: I have worked for Soilfix for 7 years and I have always felt appreciated.
Kelly: The ethos of the company is great, I enjoy being a part of my team and leaders are keen to work alongside me to make sure I am motivated and giving as much as I can to the business, supporting me when needed.
Zoe: Definitely the people, its a really close knit vibe with everyone pulling in the same direction. There is always someone on hand to help you out or lend an ear.
Proudest moment so far working for Soilfix?
Carole: Having had the opportunity to mentor Aleks & see her develop into a very proficient Purchasing Assistant.
Aleks: Being part of an amazing team
Ann: Along with Kelly, implementing a digital invoicing system over the last year, that has enabled us to continue to work effectively during the Covid-19 pandemic, and will continue to help us grow as ‘the accounts team’
Kelly: Rising to the COVID challenge and going paperless with invoice processing, involving the roll out of a new software with new processes, allowing for a more streamlined finance process from purchase order to payment.
Zoe: Taking our small 171 Linkedin followers and growing them to 1,247 followers in just over 2 years.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Carole: SHOPPING!! Gardening, seeing family & friends.
Aleks: Taking my dog for a long walk, cooking, traveling (not at the moment), gardening.
Ann: Pilates, running and jigsaw puzzles. Not to mention enjoying the odd glass of wine at the weekend.
Kelly: I have recently taken on the challenge of finally being able to run further than a few seconds away and completed my first 10k, which I was very proud of. I also enjoy spending time with my family, walks in the woods are our favourite thing to do now, lockdown helped us explore locally a lot more. Besides that, I am an Ambassador for Tropic Skincare and Beauty where I get to try out and promote lots of lovely products, sometimes over a glass of wine which is even better!
Zoe: My lifelong ambition is to become a professional tarot card reader. I have been fascinated with tarot since the age of 17 and one of those ”Regrets on your Deathbed’ conversations during lockdown finally pushed me to make the decision to study properly and obtain the correct certification in order to achieve my dream. I’ve passed two exams so far and the third and final exam is in the very near future. Tarot gets a really bad rap out there, and there is way more to it than sitting with a head scarf on, looking at the Death Card whilst someone gets a poisoned dart to the neck, in some kind of twisted Tales of the Unexpected episode! Tarot is smart and uniquely accurate if done correctly. I’d like to think of myself as part of the modern day movement to move it out of the shadows of witches and the occult and into the mainstream of life coaching and living life by design.
What inspires you?
Carole: Coming up with creative ideas to improve something or set up something new.
Ann: Knowing that I have made someone happy. Making the people I love proud of me.
Kelly: People with a clear passion, vision, and goal and my daughter!
Zoe: Authencity and creative artists living their dream
Fill in the blank: I once met ….
Carole: Ross Kemp
Aleks: Katie Price & Richard Hammond – both really drunk
Ann: The Tremeloes at my local record store where they were signing autographs. I was probably about 11 or 12 and they were promoting their single Silence is Golden which I absolutely loved.
Kelly: Gino D’Acampo and Ste from Hollyoaks (Sssh, it used to be a guilty pleasure). I am proud to announce that I have now acknowledged I am no longer a teenager. Oh and Stavros Flatley!
Zoe: Paul Ross (Jonothan Ross’s brother) – We sat next to each other at a Wedding Awards ‘do’ (my former life) he very kindly helped me walk onstage, as I was wearing skyscraper shoes and hadn’t expected to win!
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
Carole: Learn Spanish Fluently
Aleks: Speak all languages
Ann: Learn to speak another language.
Kelly: Learn to speak Dutch. My mum is from Holland, moving here when she was 18 years old. Unfortunately, she never taught me the language. We have booked a break to explore Holland next year, so there is no time like the present!
Zoe: Teleport or converse with spirits!
What’s your Monday morning ‘motivational shower song’?
Carole: Superstition, Stevie Wonder / Harvest for the World, The Christians
Aleks: Pigeon John – The Bomb
Ann: I don’t sing in the shower, I like peace and quiet in the morning.
Kelly: Dance Monkey is my current favourite or Jason Derulo Savage Love is impossible not to bounce around to!
Zoe: Florence and the Machine – Dog Days are over
What are five words (or less) of advice for others in your profession?
Carole: Focus on the positive.
Aleks: Attention to Detail
Ann: Learn from your mistakes
Kelly: Not everyone loves a spreadsheet! (Although I will never understand why not!)
Zoe: Stay Curious
