Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Soilfix carry out its remediation contracts and in what sectors?

Soilfix works in a wide variety of sectors including residential, commercial development, industrial, main contracting and public sectors. Served from our Bristol and Essex offices, Soilfix works throughout England and Wales, most commonly on projects from the Liverpool – Manchester – Leeds axis down to the South Coast.

As well as treating soil, does Soilfix also treat groundwater?

Remedial treatment of contaminated groundwater is often an integral part of the remediation process to either enable excavation at or below the water table, for groundwater betterment or to meet specific groundwater remedial objectives.

Soilfix has significant experience of carrying out ex-situ groundwater pumping & treatment, as well as various more innovative in-situ solutions for groundwater contamination problems.

Does Soilfix carry out geo-environmental site investigations & consultancy?

Soilfix does not routinely carry out Phase I/II geo-environmental site investigations for clients and prefers to work alongside a clients' nominated consultants for this work. Where further delineation or site characterisation is required prior to remediation, Soilfix can either work closely with the project consultants to achieve this objective, or carry this out if our client prefers.

Whilst geo-environmental consultancy is not our core business, Soilfix does offer specialist support to consultants to better understand abnormal cost considerations, remedial options / feasibility, materials management etc. Our preference is to be involved at the early stages of projects to maximise the potential value added solutions.

Does Soilfix carry out groundworks as part of its remediation projects?

Groundworks is not part of our core business activities. Soifix only carry out specialist civil engineering works if this is required as an integral part of the remediation & enabling process. On certain sites with significant contamination issues (e.g. asbestos, hydrocarbons, solvents) where traditional groundworks approaches have been cost prohibitive, Soilfix can deliver groundworks (e.g. drainage infrastructure) as part of its remediation service.

Does Soilfix carry out ground improvement and piling?

Soilfix routinely carries out improvement of geotechnically poor soils through a combination of screening/sorting and stabilisation/solidification techniques to improve the bearing capacity of soils excavated on brownfield sites. Soilfix also has extensive experience of various embankment stabilisation approaches including use of geogrid reinforcement, biodegradable matting, and other bio-engineered solutions.

Ground improvement approaches such as dynamic compaction (DC) or high-energy impact compaction (HEIC) is carried out on multi-disciplinary projects using specialist sub-contractors. Piled foundations or vibro-stone columns are typically carried out by our clients own sub-contractors once the development platform has been constructed and handed over by Soilfix.

Does Soilfix carry out its own site verification to secure regulatory signoff?

Soilfix prefers to engage or work alongside third party geo-environmental consultants to carry out verification sampling and reporting, in accordance with the Environment Agency’s recommended protocol. This approach provides project stakeholders with confidence that the site has been subjected to an impartial, robust verification process and most often achieves timely sign-off of remediation projects as a result.

Third party verification also allows the Soilfix team to focus on what it does best – delivering first-class remediation services to its clients.
