Community Engagement on Dockland Regeneration

Client: Peel Land and Property
Date: February 2020
Nature of Engagement: Wirral Collage

The Project

The North Bank phase of the Wirral Waters Regeneration scheme comprised over 6Ha of former industrial and warehousing land undergoing extensive regeneration following  over 200 years of industrial use.  Regeneration of this abandoned site was an important step in the rejuvenation of this area.

An earlier phase of works at Wirral Waters included development of a construction college which had already become an important hub for the local community. This provided an excellent opportunity for Soilfix to engage with the future construction generation and spread the good word on sustainable remediation and enabling of derelict brownfield sites.

Soilfix engaged  with the local construction college over several events designed to engage, educate and stimulate interest in remediation:

  • Classroom sessions on the theory behind remediation and the process involved in bringing a derelict brownfield site back into beneficial use;
  • A practical session where the students had hands on opportunities to use environmental monitoring equipment and measuring equipment used for remediation;
  • Health & safety talk on the dangers and risks associated with working and visiting construction sites;
  • A guided site tour to see remediation in action; and,
  • Follow up careers advice.

The engagement was very well received and Soilfix hope to have enthused some budding remediation practitioners for the future.
