Gloucester Quays Regeneration

Client: Gloucester Quays LLP
Date: January 2018—September 2018
Nature of works: Soil Remediation & Enabling
Contract Value: £2.0m (JCT Design & Construct)

Soilfix were contracted to carry out soil remediation and development platform preparation works on this derelict former industrial dockland site

The Challenge
The 5.5Ha site at Gloucester Quays lies within an area of Gloucester currently undergoing extensive regeneration following  over 100 years of industrial use.  Fuel and oil depots in particular were the prominent feature of the area throughout the twentieth century, with other industrial uses including a local railway network, motor services, waste operations and grain store.  In addition, parcels of the site are located within a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and as a consequence the remedial works were conducted alongside extensive archaeological excavations and controls.

Our Solution
Soilfix designed and delivered the following remedial solutions to address in-ground contamination & obstructions present:

  • Fine-tuning of development levels with objective of neutral materials balance & maximising materials reuse under a Materials Management Plan;
  • Thorough turnover/probing of the made ground on all parcels of land;
  • Breakout / removal and processing of 7,000m3 slabs & sub-structures for re-use;
  • Excavation and processing of over 80,000m3 soils;
  • Ex-situ bioremediation of 4,500m3 hydrocarbon contaminated soils;
  • Complex sorting of stockpiled / made ground materials containing significant deleterious materials including asbestos fragments;
  • Decontamination and removal of an extensive network of historic fuel pipelines;
  • Off-site disposal / recycling of separated asbestos, rubbish, tyres, metal, timbers etc.;
  • Reinstatement to development platform levels & placement of primary capping layer. This included sensitive reinstatement over archaeological remains in accordance to a strict method statement approved by Historic England; and,
  • Comprehensive environmental monitoring & controls.

Soilfix successfully completed site works ahead of programme and with no lost time accidents, facilitating the ongoing urban regeneration of this key area of Gloucester.

Of a total 90,000m3 generated, 99% materials re-use was achieved.
