Soilfix welcomed the MSc Environmental Geology & Land Contamination students and lecturers from the University of Portsmouth to our Tipner East Remediation site, as a follow-up to the remediation seminar, our Directors Steve Jackson and Paul Hazlehurst, co-presented recently.
Our Remediation Supervisor Ben Burgess gave the visitors a safety briefing, and then Steve / Paul presented a detailed case study on the multi-phased remediation project that has been carried out at Tipner East since 2011. They discussed the multi-disciplinary remediation techniques that were being carried out to render the site ‘suitable for use’ and safe for the construction of up to 850 homes on previously undevelopable, derelict land on the shores of Tipner Lakes.
Our HSQE Manager, Lewis Hunt, helped escort the students around the site, supported by Amy Smith and Richard Mabe, who also gave the students a ‘drones-eye’ view of the remediation works. However, the star of the show has to be our Graduate Remediation Engineer Leo Marcillac, who showed the students some biopile monitoring in action and demonstrated the other field instruments that go ‘beep, bleep and whirr’ to support our various remediation and re-engineering tasks.
We finished the tour with a buffet lunch whereby the Soilfix team talked to the students about their individual (and varied!) pathways to becoming remediation practitioners.
