Our Approach

Client Support & Regulatory Sign Off

Soilfix is committed to building long term relationships by always meeting our clients’ objectives and expectations. Once appointed, Soilfix keeps clients fully updated and responds rapidly to any changes in scope and program. Data is collated and integrity checked throughout a project to verify remedial targets for final regulator sign off.

Soilfix offers several support services to clients – these are often required as part of our complete remediation package but are also offered in isolation.

At the early stages of a project, we routinely carry out technical reviews, cut/fill assessments and options appraisals for our clients and/or their consultants to support development of budgetary abnormal costs during land acquisition or to understanding potential environmental liabilities.  This provides clients with a clear understanding of potential remediation costs, sustainable options, data gaps/uncertainties and likely constraints requiring consideration.

Soilfix prides itself on its high rate of repeat business with its existing customers.

Early Contractor Involvement

Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) has proven benefits for a successful project outcome, in terms of meeting the client’s budget and programme and also developing an effective ‘Project Team’ from the onset. Soilfix routinely assists clients / consultants at the early stages of a project to identify technically, commercially, and logistically viable solutions that are worth further consideration to meet specific objectives. We even routinely fly our Soilfix Drone over sites to identify potential hidden ‘constraints’ and other useful features.

This support is most effective at the remedial strategy / design phase, where Soilfix advise whether risk-based remedial objectives are viable on technical, logistical, and commercial grounds. Recommendations are given on additional site information requirements that would assist all parties to better conceptualise the site and understand risks. This can benefit the client with significant cost savings down the line, and / or fewer surprises following completion of the brownfield site acquisition.

A significant portion of most remediation projects still requires the effective management of waste soil. Soilfix can review the waste soil implications on your site and implement pre-treatment or re-use strategies that can result in significant savings on project costs.

Remedial Strategy Support / Sustainability Assessments

Soilfix routinely supports consultants to develop a remediation strategy that is both technically, commercially and logistically viable to meet site-specific requirements. The remedial strategy does not only need to satisfy contamination risk drivers identified in the Conceptual Site Model, but also taking into account various other factors such as geotechnical / development platform considerations, overlap with exiting / future site operations and client-specific priorities.

Soilfix regularly carries out tiered Sustainable Remediation Framework SuRF Assessments to support the decision-making process to determine the most sustainable remedial option(s) to meet the project objectives. We are also experienced in using sustainable decision-support tools such as SURE by Ramboll.

Our ‘remediation-bespoke’ Carbon Calculator tool can be used in parallel with the options appraisal / sustainability assessment process to determine the likely total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from the remedial strategy, and subsequently ‘Optioneer’ some alternative approaches to confirm the net reduction in emissions. This tool can help clients and their consultants make an informed decision on remediation & ground engineering option(s) with the lowest potential emissions and the cost vs benefit of adopting these alternative design approaches. We can also advise clients what their investment in using green fuels such as hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) is realising in terms of carbon emission reductions on Soilfix projects.

Remediation Feasibility Trials

Feasibility trials are routinely carried out by Soilfix on both established and emerging remedial technologies to demonstrate the viability of the remedial technique(s) being proposed at the options appraisal stage. This work either serves to refine the costed remediation design or confirm the need for an alternative approach before full-scale remediation commences on-site.

Bench-scale trials can be carried out either in the warehouse at our Avonmouth office, or at one of our partner laboratories. We are experienced in assessing a wide range of remedial technologies at the bench-scale, including bio-augmentation / bio-assay trials, chemical oxidation, chemox-stabilisation/solidification, wet & dry mix stabilisation/solidification, LNAPL skimming, column tests and so on.

Field trials routinely carried out by Soilfix include fluid injection (for substrates, chemical oxidants, bio-amendments etc.) NAPL pumping, vapour extraction, sludge separation, groundwater pumping, soil improvement, bio-piles and stabilisation/solidification. A multi-purpose pilot trailer can be used where a range of potential in-situ treatment approaches need to be assessed.
