Soilfix recently completed the technically complex remediation of a historic Tar Tank at a former gasworks in south London. This cylindrical brick structure was 15m in diameter and 5m deep, housing a mixture of demolition rubble, water and tar liquor. Remediation of this known contamination source structure was a key objective of the Remediation Strategy, agreed under planning permission with the Local Planning Authority.
Remediation of the structure was programmed over the winter period due to potential odour release causing a risk for boundary migration nuisance. As part of a comprehensive multi-layered mitigation strategy, fine-mist odour suppressant systems were in operation around the tank structure, as well as strategic positions around the site boundaries.
Spray foam suppressant was also frequently applied to odorous and impacted soils during excavation, pre-treatment and loading for off-site removal (in sealed lorries) to a permitted hazardous waste facility. Soilfix carried out stringent VOC and odour monitoring to comply with its Environmental Permit, in conjunction with independent monitoring carried out by AtkinsRealis on behalf of our client.
The successful conclusion of this complex operation would not have been possible without the advanced planning and collaborative approach taken by contractor, client and consultant.
