DEFRA Publishes PFAS Plan……

Groundwater, Regulation, Remediation

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has recently published its PFAS Plan:Building a Safer Future Together.

The plan sets out the government’s overall approach to this key environmental issue, with actions across 3 main sections:
🔳 Understanding PFAS sources;
🔳 Tackling PFAS pathways; and,
🔳 Reducing ongoing exposure to PFAS.

It was alarming to note that testing of samples from throughout the UK has confirmed PFAS to be found in approximately 80% of surface water samples, 50% of groundwater samples….. and 𝘢𝘭𝘭 fish samples tested!

The document discusses how to address the legacy of historical pollution, building on the Environment Agency Risk Screening project, which identifies potential PFAS sources and provides a high-level overview of the most likely contaminated sites. This tool serves as a 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵 for more localised investigations, helping stakeholders to identify sites of concern and offering valuable information on how to assess and manage risks.
