Soilfix are delighted to be working for Crest Nicholson to undertake soil improvement for new residential allotments, which are being constructed as part of a large new housing development at Tadpole Garden Village in Swindon.
Nutrient values within the site soil were identified as sub-optimal for their intended use within allotments at the new development. Crest required 5,000 tonnes of topsoil with improved nutrient values to enable plant growth without exporting the unsuitable material and subsequently importing new material to replace it.
Samples of site soils to be modified were obtained from site and sent for chemical analysis to verify nutrient and constituent components. Bench-scale trials were completed in-house by a Soilfix Engineer at our Bristol office, modifying site soils using varying proportions/blends of spent mushroom compost – a sustainable, nutrient rich amendment for improving soils.
Different blends were sent for chemical analysis and compared against target nutrient ranges. Optimum blends were selected, based on analysis results. The unsuitable soils were blended with the improved composition soil and processed using a screening plant.
We hope 2023 produces a bumper crop of vegetables for Tadpole Gardens!
