Site Enabling Earthworks

Poor ground conditions, comprising variable fill, geohazards, utility corridors and geoetchnical challenges can all affect how safely and efficiently a scheme moves into construction. On larger projects, earthworks do more than prepare the site. They influence programme certainty, logistics, safety, cost and the performance of the works that follow.

Soilfix combines remediation, earthworks and geotechnical improvement into one controlled package, helping clients reduce interfaces, manage risk earlier and maintain momentum on site.

Combined with remediation to provide a ‘one-stop’ package as Principal Contractor or Prime Sub-Contractor. As well as removing the barriers to redevelopment, this adds considerable value by reducing various project risks – in particular programme and commercial. Works include geotechnical improvement, development platforms, bank stabilisation, retainment solutions, archaeological and ecological support.

Combining Works

Soilfix can combine civil engineering with remediation works adding value and reducing the risks through:

Cut and fill

Having a contractor with a good understanding of contamination and waste legislation can pay dividends on brownfield cut & fill projects.  Soilfix can maximise the re-use of materials on site through careful management and application of remedial technologies.  This can result in a significant reduction in the cost of off-site disposal and soil import.  The cut and fill exercise itself can also become an important component of a remediation strategy.

All Soilfix cut and fill projects are carried out fully in accordance with CL:AIRE Code of Practice, to ensure clients remain legally compliant when soils and recovered aggregates are re-used on-site.

Infrastructure in Contaminated Ground

Soilfix have the in-house capabilities to complete infrastructure works such as large drainage runs, service trenches, interceptors, attenuation tanks, etc. Where installed in contaminated strata, such works can have significant implications for the health & safety of site workers and elevated costs associated with management, environmental controls and waste disposal.  Having all the necessary skills in-house, Soilfix is frequently able to reduce costs associated with such works, particularly when in conjunction with remediation.  Soilfix can also assist other contractors on site to meet their health & safety and environmental obligations.

Soil Stabilisation / Solidification

As well as immobilising contaminants, stabilisation can be tailored to meet the construction objectives of a project. Soilfix has significant experience in soil stabilisation to form a piling mat, capping layer or engineered fill below the development platform.

Site Enabling Earthwork – Frequently Asked Questions

Site enabling prepares land for construction by clearing vegetation, demolition of existing structures and removal of sub-structures, regrading sites to proposed formation levels, installing temporary working platforms and access roads, managing utilities, treating geotechnically poor ground, stabilising earth banks and even clearing ecological / archaeological requirements. It’s the essential first step before any building work begins.

We provide bulk excavation, cut-and-fill operations, grading, soil stabilisation, and ground improvement. These services create a stable and level platform for future development, tailored to your project’s specifications.  Mechanically Stabilised Earthworks (MSE) solutions are also required on occasion, using geo-grids and other reinforcement measures in conjunction with modified soils and site-won aggregates to create stable (and sustainable) retaining features.

We conduct detailed site investigations, including soil testing and contamination assessments, usually in partnership with geo-environmental consultants. Our team implements erosion control measures, manages soils responsibly, and ensures full compliance with environmental regulations.

Yes. We can install temporary and permanent drainage systems, manage water control, and coordinate utility connections to ensure the site is fully prepared for construction activities.  In line with current UK Circular Economy objectives, site-won aggregates are sometimes graded to facilitate the construction of sustainable urban drainage (SuDS) systems such as permeable paved solutions.

We follow strict health and safety protocols, use dust and noise suppression measures, and plan operations to minimise impact on surrounding areas and ongoing site activities – often incorporated into a Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) for the site. Our goal is to deliver an efficient enabling works solution with minimal site disruption.
